More About This Dog Breed:

Azawakhs are gentle and affectionate with their families, but they can be standoffish toward strangers and dislike being touched by people they don't know. They're also protective of their people and property. Fans describe them as a wonderful combination of loyal and independent.

Azawakh History:

The Azawakh is a sighthound originating from the West African Sahara Desert. It was first bred primarily to guard the livestock of nomadic pastoralist owners, particularly the Tuareg people. The breed was also highly regarded for its companionship and hunting skills, and often worked in packs.

Azawakh Size:

Males stand 25 to 29 inches at the shoulder and weigh 44 to 55 pounds; females are 23.5 to 27.5 inches tall and weigh 33 to 44 pounds.

Azawakh Personality:

The Azawakh bonds strongly to a single person or family, and with them he is affectionate, gentle and playful. Puppies must be placed in homes at an early age if they are to adapt, and older dogs who must be placed in new homes may find it difficult to adjust to the change. The dogs aren’t clingy, though. They are satisfied to be with their people and don’t seek a lot of physical contact.

Azawakh Health:

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems, just as all people have the potential to inherit a particular disease. Azawakh may have atypical blood work and other lab results.  The Azawakh may be prone to hypothyrodism and a bleeding disorder called von Willebrand disease.

Azawakh Care:

A good run in a fence-enclosed yard and brisk walk, totaling about an hour a day, will be sufficient to wear out your Azawakh. This breed's stamina also makes it a great running companion. The Azawakh's thin coat, minimal body fat, and desert origins mean it doesn't like the cold.

Azawakh Feeding:

Azawakh is a sensitive and very energetic dog breed that needs a complete balanced diet so that they feel and look good. Although Azawakh needs comparatively low protein than an average dog breed, it still is important than the other nutrients. The adult Azawakh needs around 18% of daily protein intake, whereas the puppy needs 22% of regular protein intake.

 Azawakh Coat Color And Grooming:

The short, smooth Azawakh coat comes in a variety of colors, including clear sand to dark red, white, black, blue, gray, brindle, grizzle, parti-color and all shades of brown, including chocolate. Regular shampooing isn't necessary, but when you do give them a bath, use a mild, hypoallergenic shampoo as they tend to have sensitive skin.

Azawakh with Children And Other Pets:

Azawakhs have a strong prey drive. If they are to live safely and amicably with cats or toy dogs, they must be brought up with them from an early age. Even then, it’s smart not to leave them together unsupervised. And an Azawakh who gets along with his family’s pets will not extend the same courtesy to the neighbor’s cat or other small animals he sees outdoors.
